Before I moved here in December, I had spent less than a week total in the bay area. It is turning out to be a wonderful treat to explore the area as a first timer, without the time restraints of a vacation visit.
The other weekend, Evan and I headed into the city to hopefully attend the Union Street Festival. Being bay area newbies, we were too stupid to take Bart into the city or park someplace easy and take MUNI to the festival. After driving around the perimeter of the festival and seeing lots of what looked like frat boys(?)* and the huge crowds, we did what any true science nerds would do, and ditched out on the arts activity to go to the Exploratorium.* We ended up getting there late in the day, so we didn’t do the sensory deprivation dome, but we had a fun couple of hours playing with the science toys.
As we were leaving, we walked through the Palace of Fine Arts. This is truly a place of peaceful beauty. I can’t believe that it was built for a one time event and that originally they planned to tear it down afterwards.
If you click on the picture below, you can see some of my other pictures from this Saturday visit to the city.
* I feel sort of judgemental saying that the festival looked like it was full of “frat boy” types, but my co-worker (who also went to the festival), with no prompting from me, said the exact same thing.
** Just so you know, I very much love the arts. We had, however, already been to the Foster City Wine and Arts Festival earlier in the day, so a little science wasn’t going to hurt us.
